I originally worked up a sketch that was over-the-top renaissance/classical style. It was intended to be 8 - 12 feet tall by 20 feet wide. It would have consisted of 3 - 5 inches of carved, high-relief columns and ornamentation framing a triptych of hand painted acrylic, 4'x8' biblical scenes on wood panels. There would have been a built-in, led light system that would have shined subtle light to form three crucifixes, from hidden holders, one crucifix onto each painting. Unfortunately the church itself is quite modern, clean-line-ish and so this design was deemed too excessive. so it turned out that a project i figured would then fall into some same-ole same-ole artists hands ended up reopening after several near-miss artists didnt work out. after a juried submission process we were granted the project based on a idea and small last supper carved relief experiment i had worked up during submission deadline day. father mike stubbs had a story in mind for the subject matter of the mural: the biblical story of the multiplication of fishes and loaves. i ran with this idea, my art history knowledge, and about 350 photos of parishiners taken by my grandfather to create the layout. it was a fairly smooth yet LONG process... just 700+ photos/photoshop layers, 200+ hours production, ink, paint, HDU, love, blood, sweat, tears, ram. check it out! other projects from 2009... morning june 25 I finished morning june 25 the day my grandmother passed away, the morning following my birthday. She was not an artist but always doodled cool little designs in a notepad while chatting on the tele phone with friends or family. i used to watch her do that when i visited her, and it kind of inspired my early drawings. she was great and i miss her much. hi five triptych this project was made specifically for the lcaa hi five - five objects exhibiton. each artist was to include 5 things in their creation: a cardboard box, a glass of water, a drink parasol, a mousetrap, and an egg. i went overboard with the theme for sure, with puns and other word-play on the five objects everywhere. it was really fun to make, and was the first time i was able to incorporate some good oled fashioned juvenile humor into my art. personal space i made personal space for the lcaa holiday show this winter. the theme of this years show was: the artist in the studio, and artspaces. i thought it was a funny theme because that is kind of the focus of all art shows really. so i took it to a voyeuristic interpretation, where the viewer would be peeping into the inner secret world of the mysterious artist. after four days of building i had a black box with mysterious peephole that revealed an image of the artist caught painting in the nude. It certainly lifted the spectators holiday spirits! check it out! nov 09 - videos worth watching... dock ellis video leprechaun siting video allen fieldhouse nov 09 - some vacation pics dec 21 09 - the mural for st francis de sales catholic church in lansing, ks is now done, installed, done again, and in place behind the altar in the new church. thanks to youngsigncompany, my grandpa gene for all the photos, tom, mom, dad, chris, jeff, celeste, father mike, larr, echo, and all the models. see pics here . dec 05 09 - eric won the theme award at the 2009 lcaa holiday show for his mixed media creation, personal space. there were a lot of funny reactions, to the piece, at the opening. dec 09 - i have three originals on display at the Leavenworth County Artists Association's annual juried holiday art show, opening friday december 04, 5-8pm, at the Heritage Center in Leavenworth. one of the pieces, called personal space, was created specifically for the theme (studio: celebrating artists and art spaces) and is quite different from my normal work. it is a custom built hdu box that is 12" x 12" x 7". it has a peephole on the front door that the viewer will look through, revealing myself painting in the buff on my studio walls. it has a daguerrotypesque personal feel about it. the reactions of some people are hilarious; might be worth recording the opening. oct . nov 09 - eric currently has 25 high end reproductions on display at st. michael and all angels episcopal church in mission. pop in and check it out if you are in the area. sept 09 - eric won the viewers choice award at the hi five - five object show at the carnegie in leavenworth eat. drink. be merry. jayhawk basketball | freestate brewing | dock ellis video | the daily show | arrested development | boulevard brewing | high noon saloon | wired | baan thai | all work on site Copyright ? 2004-2011 eric hoins.
